Elche (Spanish) Elx (Valencian) is a municipality and the capital of the Spanish comarca Baix Vinalopó. Elche is located 23 kilometers from Alicante ( Costa Blanca ). With more than 230,000 inhabitants, it is the third city in the Valencia region. 
A walk through the city center of Elche takes you past the city's Arabic history and many baroque architecture. For example, the city's current basilica was built on the site where a large mosque once stood. View this basilica of Santa María, visit the pleasant square La Glorieta Plaza and walk through the city's beautiful parks.

One of the most special places in Elche is the Palmeral de Elche. With more than 200,000 palm trees, this is one of the largest palm tree gardens in the world. In addition to palm trees, you will also find other Mediterranean trees here, such as the orange tree and the fig tree. Palmeral de Elche was built by the founders of the city (the Moors) and is therefore very old. Since 2000, the palm tree garden has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In the palm tree garden you will find one very special palm tree, the Palmera Imperial (Imperial Palm Tree). This palm tree is the only one in the world with seven trunks and resembles a candlestick in appearance. According to history, Princess Sissi fell in love with Elche in 1894 thanks to this palm tree. In addition to this imperial palm tree, there are more palm trees with names, usually these palm trees are named in tribute to local and national heroes.
In addition to lovely walks among the palm trees, the park has many pigeons and ducks to feed, a bandstand where concerts take place, a restaurant and a visitor center. The visitor center is called el Huevo (the Egg) and can be recognized by its round, white shape.
Elche is a very good city for shopping. Lovers of a nice pair of shoes will especially enjoy themselves here. In addition to being the city of palm trees, Elche is also a real shoe city. About 50 percent of all Spanish shoes are produced in Elche
